An Associate might initially find this next concept a little strange to understand
from a verbal explanation, appearing, to use the usual phrase, as “Double Dutch”,
with no disrespect to our fellow Europeans of course. We will look though this explanation
in relation to our Advanced Motoring approach specifically to negotiating our way
around a bend which is usually considered to be where the limit point comes to our
attention but don’t forget, the limit point principle also applies when we are approaching
the brow of a hill where we would simply do a mirror check and ease off the gas at
the top of the rise until such time as we have gained a commanding view of what lies
beyond when we reapply the power.
What we have tried to do here is to give a simple phase by phase explanation of the
concept, by way of subtle references to each element of the observational techniques
and procedures for negotiating the hazards of steep bends. The Country Lane element
of the Advanced Course does highlight quite substantially the pressures of negotiating
steep bends safely, usually taken at a higher speed than what an Associate would
generally travel around such a curve.
It is important therefore to have a good understanding of what we are trying to achieve
at this Advanced level of driving and any questions arising from the concept must
be put to your Observer for a full explanation.
