BE CAREFUL
Given that many of us passed our driving tests more years ago than we care to remember and we all consider ourselves as good drivers do we not, it is hardly surprising then that the Highway Code isn’t high on our reading lists. Most new drivers forget a great deal of the information contained within it soon after they have passed their Theory Test ... remember the old driving test, we had to answer six Highway Code questions correctly at the end of the drive ... get them wrong and we failed the test. Not today however.
A very important person we all see daily is the lollipop lady (or gentleman), sadly in decline, even though a number of them have been rewarded with MBE’s for a lifetime of service to the schooling community. Putting their lives at risk in all weathers before irresponsible drivers particularly ( and we have all seen them ) who consider the zebra crossing, where most of the school patrol crossings officers are on duty, as an annoying disturbance to the progress of their journey. Their blatant disregard for safety risks the lives of those waiting at the Zebra and tragically, a number of lollipop persons and young children in their charge have died or been injured as a result.
Just as a reminder of the contents of the Highway Code, the lollipop is not just there for decoration, the position of it in the hands of the patrol can be considered as a set of traffic lights. Have a look below just to refresh in your memory what the positions of the lollipop really mean to us as drivers ...... and we as Advanced Drivers must keep abreast of all the Highway Code at all times.
