Stopping drill -
1. Check mirror early
2. Signal if necessary
3. Apply brakes early and lightly
4. Depress clutch for last few yards of travel to prevent a stall
5. Stop close to and parallel to the kerb leaving room for manoeuvre
6. Apply handbrake
7. Select neutral
8. Switch off any ancillary equipment you have used and stop the engine
9. Select appropriate parking gear
10. Release seatbelt
11. Check mirrors, shoulder check before opening door and leaving the vehicle
Stopping drill -
1. Check mirror early
2. Signal if necessary
3. Apply brakes early and lightly
4. Stop close to and parallel to the kerb
5. Apply handbrake -
6. Select P (Park)
7. Turn off all ancillaries that you have used
8. Turn off engine
9. Release footbrake
10. Release seatbelt
11. Check mirror, shoulder check before opening door and leaving vehicle
Please note:
Vehicle technology is changing rapidly, and the drills may need modifying to suit
the particular vehicle and for example, some vehicles (e.g. Renault and Citroen)
are fitted are now fitted with an electrically powered parking brake in place of
a 'pull-
Similarly, Renault for example has an interlock preventing the engine from starting unless the brake pedal (automatic) or clutch (manual) are depressed.
Automatic gearboxes may now be 'robotised' manual boxes with a full manual 'flip-
There is one certain requirement; read the handbook.
Starting drill -
1. External checks
2. Handbrake check -
3. Doors
4. Seat position
5. Seat belt
6. Mirrors
7. Static brake check
8. Depress clutch, select neutral
9. Switch on ignition (with hand on wheel), check display, fuel
10. Start engine (with hand on wheel)
11. Check PAS
12. Check instruments, select auxiliary equipment
13. Select appropriate starting gear (normally first)
14. Mirror checks, left and right shoulder checks
15. Pull away if safe to do so
16. 2nd gear, 20mph, mirror, Moving Brake test
Starting drill -
1. External checks
2. Handbrake check -
3. Doors
4. Seat position
5. Seat belt
6. Mirrors
7. Static brake check
8. Switch on ignition (with hand on wheel), check display, fuel
9. Apply footbrake, ensure transmission lever is in P (park) or N (neutral)
10. Start engine (with hand on wheel)
11. Check PAS
12. Check instruments, select auxiliary equipment
13. Move transmission lever to D (drive) or R (reverse) as required
14. Mirror checks, left and right shoulder checks
15. Pull away if safe to do so (handbrake should be released just when you move off)
16. Move off – 20mph, mirror, Moving Brake Test
